Taipei, October 28, 2020 – Getac announces the introduction of integrated LiFi technology for the first time to the rugged equipment market. This means that customers from various professional sectors will soon be able to enjoy the benefits of fully robust reliability and innovative LiFi connectivity in a single device, opening the way for a host of powerful new applications and use cases.

Until now, users who wanted to reap the benefits of LiFi technology had to use a USB dongle connected to the device. This method is vulnerable to the slightest bump or drop, something unfeasible in many work environments in the defense, public safety, automotive, natural resources and manufacturing sectors. This announcement means that users in these industries will be able to purchase a fully robust solution with LiFi technology fully integrated into the device. The first Getac device to offer the built-in LiFi feature will be the recently launched fully rugged UX10 tablet.

LiFi Technology: High-quality, secure connectivity through light

LiFi (light fidelity) technology uses light to transmit data instead of radio frequency, as is the case with traditional technologies such as Wi-Fi, LTE, 4G, 5G, etc. This innovative approach offers a number of benefits over RF-based technologies, including:

  • Greater privacy and security: Light can be contained in a physical space and with greater ease than radio waves. In this way, it is much less vulnerable to hacking or hijacking, while offering greater control over network location, asset tracking, and user authentication.
  • Excellent connection quality: LiFi offers a data density thousand times higher than that of networks based on radio frequency, resulting in greater reliability and interference-free communications. LiFi also does not interfere with radio frequency signals, which means that both networks can work simultaneously in the same physical space.
  • Extremely low latency: Light-based data connections have significantly lower latency than RF-based technologies, which can greatly facilitate innovation, automation, and the use of advanced applications such as augmented reality and virtual reality.

Opening new application possibilities in various sectors

The combination of robust reliability and LiFi connectivity opens up a number of powerful new application possibilities in various industries. Among them:

  • Defense: Fully robust, intrinsically safe communication solutions that can be rapidly deployed in the field due to minimal cabling requirements.
  • Public Safety: Super-high speed on-site data collection and transmission in emergency situations aided by high-quality, low-latency LiFi connectivity.
  • Automotive: Fast, seamless data downloads to update vehicle firmware in the highly physical environments of factories or shops.
  • Manufacturing and energy: LiFi can help convert aging infrastructure to the Internet of Things (IoT), aiding digital transformation in areas where there are concerns that RF-based equipment will interfere with safety-essential operations.

“At Getac, we work with a broad portfolio of customers from diverse industries, many of whom have very specific technology requirements and challenges,” says Rick Hwang, President of Getac’s Video and Robust Solutions Business Group. “Today’s announcement once again demonstrates our commitment to finding solutions to these challenges by combining powerful new technologies like LiFi and our proven rugged devices to create industry-leading solutions that excel even in the harshest environments. most adverse operations”.
